This is the first time I’ve taken part in the Wednesday Hodgepodge, but I’ve been reading the posts for a while and it seems like fun. Here are my answers to this week’s questions:
1. August is National Back To School Month…how does that make you feel? Share a back-to-school memory.
Well, we don’t start back to school until September here, so August is still about sun, fun and family time for me. My husband and I both work in secondary schools, so I still associate this time of year with fresh starts. I get to invest in shiny new stationery and convince myself that I’m super-organised.
The back-to-school memory that springs to mind is my first day at high school. My mum took lots of awkward photos of me in my oversized blazer. I remember meeting my classmates and getting to do lots of taster sessions for different subjects. I still have the terrible felt mouse that I made in textiles, with its ear hanging off and far too little stuffing.
2. Something you’ve learned in ‘the school of life’?
Listen to what your body is trying to tell you. Hustle culture and social media can make us feel bad for being “unproductive” but it’s so important to rest and make time for ourselves. Don’t take your mental or physical health for granted.
3. Three words to describe your current mood.
Pensive, apathetic, lethargic.
4. A summer food you’ve eaten too much of/are tired of? A summer food you haven’t had enough of?
I’ve had far too many veggie burgers over the last couple of weeks, either barbecued or when we’ve eaten out. I don’t think I can take any more.
5. What small stuff do you sweat that you know you shouldn’t?
I have GAD, so pretty much everything! Right now, I’m worried about an event I have coming up but also procrastinating instead of getting on with preparing for it (self-sabotage?). The hot weather has also had me literally and figuratively sweating over what to wear. I don’t seem to have many outfits that keep me cool and are also appropriate for going out!
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I’m looking forward to going to the cinema with my sister later. It’s her birthday and we always have a good laugh together.
Do you have any back-to-school memories? What’s your favourite summer food? Let me know in the comments!
