The Latest in my life ☀️

Although my chronic pain issues continue, I’ve had lots of distractions this week because I’ve been off work for half term. We went for a lovely day out in Skegness (our local seaside town) last Saturday as my daughter was booked in for her 2nd Covid vaccination and we thought we might as well make a day of it. We had a nice meal out while my daughter explored the soft play area, and then we visited Natureland Seal Sanctuary in the afternoon, which was great fun.

The day after we went to my Dad’s house for my step-brother’s birthday barbecue and took my Grandma with us. It was so nice to see everyone. On Tuesday, I went out for bowling (I lost abysmally) and a meal with some friends from work. My friend and I took our kids for a windy walk at a local nature reserve on Wednesday, where my daughter managed to step in a cow pat in her white trainers and put her hand in bird poo. After hosing her down (only a slight exaggeration), I went out for a choir rehearsal followed by an impromptu late-night pizza and wine session with two close friends.

Thursday was a little quieter, but we did pop down to our local playing field where there was a Jubilee Fun Day. I bumped into two old friends and had a quick catch-up, which was lovely. Friday and Saturday were busy days as I had two jubilee choir performances (more about that below) and a meal out with my mum-in-law. Today I’ve been having a much-needed rest!

Writing ✍️

No real writing progress to report this week as I’ve been so busy. But I did write this little drabble in response to a prompt in my Facebook writing group.

Prompt: What’s your best two-sentence horror story?

My drabble: Shaking, she slammed the off switch and yanked out the power cord, but the slideshow of gruesome images only accelerated. She backed away, stumbling into the gurney as a single word flickered across the screen: RUN.

Why not have a go at writing your own? I’d love to see what you come up with.

Reading 📖

I’m about two-thirds of the way through Punching the Air, a novel in verse by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam. It’s pretty gripping and emotional so far.

Watching and Listening 📺

  • I loved the first 7 episodes of series 4 of Stranger Things. I’m glad that we’re finally getting some answers about The Upside Down and what happened to El at the lab. I’m also enjoying the darker horror vibe. I can’t wait for the rest of the series in July!
  • I’m a few episodes into Night Sky on Prime. It’s intriguing so far and I especially like that the protagonists are in their later years. But the pace is a little slow for my taste. I’m hoping there’s some more action next episode or I’m not sure I’ll see it through to the end.
  • I discovered the amazingly talented Devon Cole on TikTok (@devoncolemusic). Her songs are so catchy and addictive, especially this one:

Singing 🎵

We had our first ever choir performance on Friday at a care home. It was difficult singing outdoors in the wind, but the residents seemed to enjoy it. They joined in waving their union flags as we sang some wartime tunes like “We’ll Meet Again”, “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”, “Pack Up Your Troubles”, and, of course, the national anthem. I played the drums for a couple of numbers, which I found pretty difficult as I can’t really multi-task!

Our second choir show was at our local church-turned-community-centre, a truly beautiful venue with great acoustics. We were in our comfort zone as it’s where we usually meet, though I was nervous as my mum and stepdad had come to watch. But once I started singing I relaxed and really enjoyed it. My favourite songs were “Lean On Me”, “Only You” and “Rule the World”.

There were about 150 guests throughout the day and there was a brilliant atmosphere. I’ve seen a few recordings and we sounded much better than I expected! I’m proud of what we’ve achieved in such a few months. Charlotte, who runs the group, is amazing. I’m looking forward to choosing some new songs to work on soon.

Quote of the Week 💬

"I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together."-HM Queen Elizabeth II, www.geckoandfly.com

  1. I love seals. that place looks neat. And a seaside visit is always nice!

I just finished Stranger Things 4 and liked the ending. I’ve been complaining a bit about the episode lengths but the last two episodes really picked up the pace. Love the Eleven bits and the lab! I watched Night Sky a week or two ago and I agree- it’s interesting but a little slow. I think the payoff at the end is pretty good though?

    Nice quote. 🙂 Happy Jubilee!!!

    • We are lucky to only live about 30 minutes from the seaside.
I haven’t seen the ending of Night Sky yet as I’ve been distracted by Obi-Wan but that’s good to know it picks up a bit.

  2. Sounds like there were some excellent life moments there. Very cool. I hope you’ll be able to write more soon, too.
I wrote a humorous piece for the June WEP prompt.
And I have my favorite book world narrowed down for the IWSG July prompt.
