The Latest in my life ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

The last couple of weeks have been tough. Pain from my chronic tension headache, toothache, sinuses and TMJD has been worse than ever and is starting to get me down. I’m taking the maximum dose of my prescribed painkillers and it’s making me more forgetful and giving me nausea and motion sickness. But I can’t manage my normal activities without them. My physiotherapist has said he’ll refer me to a muscular-skeletal doctor for further investigation if it carries on. I’m also getting my upper wisdom tooth removed next month and I cannot wait. I’m hoping it will bring some relief.

My daughter has also had some ups and downs lately and has needed some extra support in dealing with her T1 diabetes. I wish I could wave a magic wand and take the burden from her. Instead, I’m trying to educate her about her condition as much as possible and make sure she knows I’m here for her. I’m planning more trips and fun activities to cheer her up too. We saw some friends at our local soft play yesterday and that was a much-needed break for both of us.

Writing โœ๏ธ

On Thursday, I attended an online scriptwriting workshop hosted by Sarah Crockford with my local writers’ group. I wasn’t sure it would be relevant for me as I’m interested in short stories and novels rather than scriptwriting, but it actually turned out to be super helpful. She walked us through the process of creating a “beat sheet”, prompting us with questions to drive the plot forward. It was a bit daunting trying to come up with a new story on the spot, but by the end of the session, I had a full outline for a short story. It’s a paranormal comedy with the working title “The Silver Slayer”. It was a lot of fun to put together and also to see how the other writers fleshed out their ideas. I think I’ll have a go at writing the full story soon.

Reading ๐Ÿ“–

I’m in a real reading slump at the minute, maybe because of everything going on. Although I miss reading and have a huge pile of books I want to get stuck into, I’m struggling to concentrate. Hopefully, that will change soon as I don’t feel like myself when I’m not reading.

Watching and Listening ๐Ÿ“บ

  • I loved Dr Strange, Multiverse of Madness. The tone was much darker and more like a horror movie in places. I also enjoyed seeing some of my favourite characters from other franchises, even if they didn’t get much screen time. The ending had me in tears. I think it hits different as a mother. Shame that the end credit scenes were rubbish, though!
  • I re-watched The Hunger Games with my husband last night. I still love the story and the characters, but I wish they would have made it at least a 15 rather than a 12. Most of the violence is only implied (hardly any blood) and a few characters die off-screen, so the threat level is greatly reduced and it’s a bit tame. Other than that, I really enjoyed it and will rewatch the rest of the trilogy.
  • My favourite tunes at the moment are Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” and Pharrell Williams’ retro-sounding song, “Just a Cloud Away”.

Singing ๐ŸŽต

My choir is performing in a couple of weeks so we have been rehearsing and planning for that. We’re visiting a care home for a sing-along of some war-time classics on Friday 3rd June, followed by a performance for the Queen’s Jubilee at our local community centre on Saturday 4th. I feel fairly confident about most of the songs now, I just need to get plenty of practice in so I know the lyrics and harmonies off by heart without having to look at my sheet all the time. I’m looking forward to it but slightly nervous too.

I’ve started following a vocal coach on TikTok, @total_vocal. His tips are so helpful and he has some great life advice too. Go check him out!

  1. I know all about wanting to take the pain of your kid. My daughter had migraines from her six years old and we tried everything. It was so hard to see her struggle! I hope removing the wisdom teeth will help you, really!

  2. That script-writing class sounds very helpful. I have novels I’m like 50-75% of the way through and get stuck. I try to start outlines and then just get stuck barely starting them too. But I’m hoping to get back to writing once school is out for summer. I suffer from bouts of vertigo so I know how much that motion sickness and nausea can be. Hope you get things figured out so you can get the pain and all that taken care of.

    • I have a few novels in a similar state too. I write myself into a plot hole and then get frustrated and give up. I’m waiting for the summer holidays too; it’s always my busiest writing time.

  3. Sorry about the tension headaches. Definitely spring fever here on my end, with the sniffles and the sinuses and allergies. Hope the week goes much better.

  4. I’m sorry you’ve been in so much pain. I deal with chronic pain as well. I have chronic headaches, not sure the cause, and Fibromyalgia. I’m sorry it’s getting you down. {{{hugs}}} I’m also sorry about the ups and downs for your daughter and her T1 diabetes. That’s no fun either.

I love the quote you shared. I try to follow that quote religiously. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to survive. Good luck with everything. I hope things get better soon. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

    • Sorry that you’re dealing with chronic pain too. My mum has fibromyalgia and it seems very difficult to live with and not well understood by others, even doctors.

  5. I also have TMJ and had to have an orthodontist make mouth guards for me. They did help but then had to have them remade and the second person did not do a good job so I don’t wear them. I hope you are able to get relief from all the things soon. Sorry about the reading slump too. Have a great week.

    • I need to have mine remade too as my bite seems to have changed a lot since they were made. I’m hoping the new one will help as it’s so painful in the mornings.

  6. I’m sorry to hear about the pain issues. I hope you get relief soon. I’ve been having a little tooth pain too and I need to call the dentist. ๐Ÿ™‚ Tooth pain is no fun. Especially when you have other sources of pain as well…

I still have to see Dr. Strange.

    • Yeah, a toothache is one of the worst pains in my opinion. It ends up radiating into your whole face and head. I hope you get yours sorted soon.

  7. I really hope both you and your daughter will feel better soon!! Currently reading Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and hope to re-watch the movies before this one comes out ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I like the quote. I’ve found that reading non-fiction when everything in my life isn’t making it easy to concentrate on reading has helped. I’ve just finished a book on pain (I suffer from chronic pain, myself) and found it helpful — I’ll recommend it to you on Goodreads.
    All the best.

  9. Red

I’m so sorry about your pain.
My week was more social than usual, and that causes mental and emotional fatigue for me. Today is a “stay home” day. I was social Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and have plans to be social tomorrow, too. Not my favorite way to be, but I know it’s good for me, too. Enjoy your week and your singing!

    • I know what you mean. I enjoy socialising while I’m there but it drains me a lot too. I need a good balance of social days and PJ days.

  10. A big, big sigh on the medical maladies. Pain is a soul sucker and nausea a beast.
I rely on reading to get me through difficult times. Have you tried going back to old favourites if your concentration is shot?
Love that quote of the week.
    Hugs.

  11. Fortunately I don’t deal with too much pain most of the time. It comes and goes, but mostly I’m okay. Pretty good for an old man I guess. The pain that I hate the most is toothache. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had a really bad toothache that required dental treatment, but with the bad shape of my teeth I’m fearing that more might be ahead.

I’ve been very bad about reading for the past couple years. I finished an old sci fi novel back in March–took a few months for me to read that one. Now I’m trying to get into a book my step-daughter recently had published. So far I haven’t gotten past the introduction. She’s a professor so it’s an academic book which is something that I don’t take to very well. And I can’t say that I’m that interested in her topic which is one of her fields of expertise. I’m determined to finish her book, but it’s probably going to take a while.

Then I’ll read something more to my liking. Maybe that will go more quickly and easily.

    • Yeah, I hate toothache. It is really the worst.
It’s hard to get into reading something you’re not in the mood for, or which isn’t your usual genre. It takes me ages to get through non-fiction.
