The Latest in my Life

The last couple of months have been pretty eventful. I attended my first in-person author event and performed in a dance show. I’ve also had school opening evenings, medical appointments and social events galore.

The best event, though, was my sister and brother-in-law’s wedding. I was a bridesmaid and my daughter was a flower girl. We had such a brilliant day with close family and friends.

Unfortunately, my daughter tested positive for Covid-19 last weekend, so my husband and I had to take turns going to work on the last week of term. Thankfully, she has had very mild symptoms (just fatigue and a runny nose). Her isolation period ends tomorrow, but I’ve had a sore throat and headaches so we are testing daily to be on the safe side. We’re all at home for the half-term break anyway, so I’m catching up with all my writing and blogging tasks while I have the chance.

If we are all ok by Wednesday, we are hoping to visit the local pumpkin patch with friends. I need to get hold of pumpkins whatever happens as my sister has practically begged me to make my pumpkin pie! I might share the recipe in a few days. I always enjoy carving pumpkins with my daughter, too.

Writing

  • I had a brilliant time at Boston Book Fest last month. You can find out all about my experience here.
  • Fall Into Fantasy 2021 was released on September 21st. It’s a fantasy anthology from Cloaked Press that contains my Slavic mythology story, “Beneath the Roots”.
  • I recently finished writing another short story based on ancient Lithuanian mythology. It’s a comedy fantasy called “Honey, I Shrunk the Earth”. I’ve entered it into a competition but won’t hear anything until December.
  • I’ve just signed up for NaNoWriMo, though I’m not being strict about the 50K word goal. I’m just hoping to get more of my science fantasy novel written and feel inspired again. I’d love more NaNo buddies, so please add me (phoenixlife) if you’re taking part.
  • I’m considering entering the Winter of Wonder anthology call, but I’m running out of time…

Reading

I recently read I Am Change by Suzy Zail for work, which was very powerful and emotional (review coming soon). I’ve also just finished Warwick Eede’s new fantasy-Western comic, Human Beings Issue 1, which is really intriguing. I’m now reading a fantasy book called The Malestrom by Matthew Barnes.

Watching

  • We recently finished watching Ghosts on BBC iPlayer, which stars the cast of Horrible Histories. It was nice watching something silly and light-hearted for a change.
  • We’ve almost finished this series of Silent Witness, and I’ve enjoyed all the twists and turns. The tension between Nicki and Jack is almost unbearable, though. Please, just get together so I can die happy!
  • We’re tuning in to The Great British Bake Off every Tuesday. I’m a big fan of Jürgen. He must be protected at all costs.
  • We watched Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds last night. It was like a cross between Ready Player One and The Trueman Show. It was quite fun.

  1. Sorry to hear about your daughter, but glad it’s mild. And good luck to you as well, hoping you guys stay Covid free! And congrats on Fall Into Fantasy!

    • Thanks, Greg. I am surprised we have not had it sooner due to us both working in schools. I’m feeling very grateful to be double jabbed. Thank you. I’m very pleased to be included in this anthology.

  2. I think my halloween plans are over except for handing out candy to all the neighborhood ghouls and boys. LOL I went to a party last weekend. Glad to hear you enjoyed Free Guy – I love Ryan Reynolds and want to see that move. Hope your family is all healthy and having fun 🙂

  3. I hope your daughter is improving and that you and your husband manage to stay well. In my area, we cannot go into the office is there is a Covid-positive person in the home. We have to quarantine as well. Congrats to your sister on her marriage. Lovely photos of the day!

  4. I love the look of your blog. Sooo pretty! 😀
I’m sorry to read about your daughter. I hope you guys are all feeling much better now.
Congratulations on your sisters wedding. They look beautiful.
Have a great week and happy reading.

I just attended my niece’s wedding virtually. They live-streamed it for those unable to attend. (They required vaccinations and I’m half-vaccinated, but can’t leave my home in Vietnam with any hope of returning as the borders are still closed.) It is definitely more fun to attend a wedding in person!

I will be doing Nano again this year, and like you, I’m freeing my mind of the 50k goal. I’m querying my first novel right now, and want to edit one of my other draft novels in November, to have something else pseudo-ready in case anyone asks. I’d be happy to be your Nano-buddy!

  6. Congrats on committing to NaNoWriMo in any capacity 🙂 I haven’t done it in years, but it is inspiring to commit and try to get out of your own head sometimes 😉 I still want to see Free Guy – looking forward to it, and your review makes it sound worth the effort. Hope your November is going well!

  7. Hi Anstice!
    Your blog looks very pretty!
I hope that NaNoWriMo went well for you. Anybody who attempts NaNoWriMo is a champion!
Congrats on participating in the Boston Book Festival. I’m sure you had a blast!
Hope that you and your family are feeling better and are back to good health; well, as good as can be (under the circumstances with this crazy global Covid condition…)

    • Thanks, Michelle. NaNo didn’t work out this year as life went rather pear-shaped. But I will be finishing my project next year. Hope you have a great Christmas.
