Life, the Universe, and Everything According to My Five-Year-Old

This month I’m taking part in the Blogging from A-Z Challenge and will be posting every day except Sundays. My readers voted for the theme “Life, the Universe, and Everything According to My Five-Year-Old”. During bedtime discussions and colouring sessions, my daughter will finally be providing the answers to the philosophical problems and unsolved mysteries that have puzzled humanity’s greatest thinkers for centuries.

The universe explained

Me: What do you know about the universe? What’s in it?

L: The sun, a black sky and stars and a moon and the earth. The round earth, I mean. And there’s Mars and there’s the one that has the ring about it. I’ve forgotten what that’s called.

Me: It’s Saturn.

L: Thanks, mum.

Me: How many stars are there?

L: A million billion!

Me: What are stars made of?

L: Hmm…diamonds.

Me: What is the sun made of?

L: Lava.

Me: What does the sun do?

L: It makes people’s skin burn. But it’s also here to make it bright.

Me: Do you think there might be more than one universe?

L: Lots of universes!

Me: Wow, what makes you think that?

L: There’s lots of worlds aren’t there and it’s night to them so there has to be lots of earths. But there’s only one sun and one everything else.

Me: How big do you think the universe is?

L: This big [stretches out arms wide]. I can’t stretch any further so I don’t know how big is it. It can fit lots of planets in, though. There are 9 planets.

  1. I love the idea of a multiverese. Can anyone really fathom how big the universe is? I have trouble imagining how big our world is, how there are so many people all on this planet right now. Loves these chats with your daughter!

  2. In line with your daughter, I too believe in multiple universes but cannot comprehend the vastness of space nor the logic of its existence. Your daily chats are quite enlightening and very thought-provoking.

  3. Such a sweet theme! During one of the previous A to Z challenges a few years ago, I used to ask my three year old for a word for the alphabet and write about it… I always wonder how immaterial many of the things we ponder , worry or fight about are under the vast expanse of the universe. With so many galaxies and stars it is tough to believe that we are the only existent life forms on earth .
