Am I a risk-taking writer? (#IWSG April 2021)

Writing Update

Unfortunately, I’ve not written a single word of creative fiction for a month. I have been very busy at work since returning full-time and I haven’t really been taking proper care of myself, if I’m honest. I’ve just been feeling stressed and burnt out and writing hasn’t really crossed my mind. But luckily it’s now the Easter holidays and I’m enjoying a couple of weeks at home with my family. I’m recharging my batteries and immersing myself in books, films, video games and cuddles with my cats.

All the reading is making me feel like writing again, so I don’t think it will be long before I pick up my pen. I’m hoping to take part in the WEP flash fiction challenge from 21st-23rd April. It usually inspires me and gives me a creative boost.

Am I a risk-taking writer?

This month’s optional question:

Are you a risk-taker when writing? Do you try something radically different in style/POV/etc. or add controversial topics to your work?

I wouldn’t say I take huge risks with writing, as I am fairly methodical in my approach and like to plan every last detail. But I do like to experiment with different styles, genres and POVs. For example, I’ve written flash fiction pieces in the 2nd person or from the perspective of inanimate objects and I am a huge fan of twisting and blending different genres. I try to think “out of the box” when responding to prompts and that has led to some success with writing contests.

I’m not afraid of including controversial topics and have written about things such as drug addiction, mental health issues, suicide and domestic abuse. However, I wouldn’t include them just for shock value. I think it’s important to do research on those topics so that you don’t perpetuate harmful stereotypes or spread misinformation. If I think I can help shed light on a misunderstood issue, then I am inclined to write about it. But I try to be mindful of who might be affected, and sometimes it’s clear that my voice is not the one that needs to be heard.
