Life, the Universe, and Everything According to My Five-Year-Old

This month I’m taking part in the Blogging from A-Z Challenge and will be posting every day except Sundays. My readers voted for the theme “Life, the Universe, and Everything According to My Five-Year-Old”. During bedtime discussions and colouring sessions, my daughter will finally be providing the answers to the philosophical problems and unsolved mysteries that have puzzled humanity’s greatest thinkers for centuries.

Why do we dream?

Me: Why do you think we have dreams?

Leona: Um. To help us to sleep.

Me: Where do they come from?

L: Our brain, of course!

Me: Why does your brain make dreams?

L: Um. Because it controls everything. My brain knows everything!

Me: Does everyone dream?

L: Yes, of course! I always have dreams about bad dreams. Every time I always start there’s bad dreams.

Me: Where do you think the bad dreams come from?

L: Remember that black guy from Santa?

Me: [momentarily confused] Ah, you mean Pitch from Rise of the Guardians?

L: Yeah, the Boogeyman. And we get good dreams from Sandy! I don’t really believe in them, though.

Me: Why not?

L: I just don’t.

I used to analyze my dreams. Had a book and everything. Called in to late night radio once, too. The most significant thing I remember is that dreams are egocentric. Everything in your dream is about you. People are just that element of you that is most like that person. Like that.
