My Favourite Genres to Read (#IWSG March 2021)

Writing Update

I didn’t manage to do much writing last month, other than my flash fiction piece for WEP. Working from home has been pretty draining, and I haven’t felt like writing or editing after being on my laptop all day. I return to working in school from the 8th March and I think once I get back into a routine it will be easier to write then. Plus, the sunshine is starting to come out and it always makes me feel more motivated and creative.

My Favourite Writing Genres

This month’s optional question:

Everyone has a favourite genre or genres to write. But what about your reading preferences? Do you read widely or only within the genre(s) you create stories for? What motivates your reading choice?

If you’ve visited my blog before, it will probably come as no surprise that I prefer to read the same genres that I write: fantasy and sci-fi. I enjoy almost every sub-genre within the speculative fiction category, including urban fantasy, high fantasy, dystopian, space opera, fairytale retellings and steampunk.

I also read a lot of children’s fiction during story time with my daughter. Occasionally, I will pick up a mystery/thriller, but I have to be in the right mood for those. When I venture into non-fiction it tends to be autobiographies or books about writing, parenting, achieving goals, science or nature.

A couple of weeks ago I had to read a contemporary drama/thriller for my work book club and I couldn’t gel with it at all, even though it was well written. It dealt with some gritty topics and left me feeling rather bleak and gloomy. It was interesting to read something out of my comfort zone, but I was relieved to get back to reading about spaceships and dragons again!

I think it’s wonderful that there are so many different genres of book out there. There’s truly something for everyone.

  1. I also live in the speculative universe. It is so rewarding. If you have any favorites you think I should read, let me know. I’m trying to read as much as I can!

    • Unfortunately, it’s grey again here already, But hopefully, it will get a lot sunnier now springtime is approaching. It always makes me feel refreshed.

    • I love escaping into worlds completely different from reality. I’ve tried other genres, but I always come back to spec fic.

  2. I love your ‘over to you’:)
I do like drama/thrillers, but sometimes they can suck the happy right out of you.
Hope your muse is dancing on your shoulder:)
