The Latest in my Life

Typically for the UK, we had beautiful sunshine on Friday and it was snowing and hailing the very next day. It’s been the same today but unfortunately it didn’t settle. I’m hoping it might snow overnight so I can play in it with my daughter and build a snowman.

I’m still working from home and home schooling my daughter 4 days a week. We’re getting into a better routine now, though it’s still not easy. I really enjoy switching off from it all at the weekend.

Blogging

Yesterday, I finally got around to doing a Stacking the Shelves post to share the new books I got for Christmas. I’ve also been sorting some things out behind the scenes, such as featured images and categories. I really want to invest more time in blogging this year.

Reading

the prince and the troll

Today, I read a short story by Rainbow Rowell: The Prince and the Troll. I quite liked it. It was an interesting allegory which seemed to be about poverty, climate change and the pitfalls of capitalism. I was planning on reading more of her work, but apparently Rowell has written some problematic books and has been accused of racism towards the East Asian community. Disappointing.

I’m still reading Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce and my daughter and I are nearing the end of More Wishing Chair Stories by Enid Blyton.

Watching

My favourite part of this weekend was snuggling up on the sofa with my daughter as I introduced her to the animated version of The BFG, starring David Jason. It brought back a lot of childhood memories and she said it was “amazing”.

I’m on season 3 of House M.D now. The storyline with Detective Tritter is hard to watch and I just want to punch him in the face.

I watched the 3rd episode of WandaVision on Friday and things are getting more interesting. I’ve been reading up on Marvel comic characters such as Mephisto, Agatha Harkness and Monica Rambeau, whom I think have a big role to play in the story. I’m excited about the direction this is going!

I also watched the first episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks on Prime last night. It was quite funny and I think it has potential. I enjoyed all the references to TOS and TNG episodes.

Listening to

I’ve had Don McClean’s “American Pie” stuck in my head all week. The song has fascinated me ever since I was a teenager, both because of the tragic plane crash that inspired it, and the obscure allusions to other artists and political events in the lyrics. McClean has never offered an explanation as to what the lyrics mean, and I love that everyone has their own interpretation.

Quote of the Week

In every known nook of our nation,
In every corner called our country,
Our people, diverse and beautiful,
Will emerge, battered and beautiful.
When day comes, we step out of the shade,
Aflame and unafraid.
The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.

“The Hill We Climb” by Amanda Gorman

  1. David Acheson

I once heard Don McLean interviewed. His explanation was that it was about the American Dream and the fact that it had turned into a nightmare. I think this is helpful. The American Pie is the American dream to which McLean is saying farewell to. I’m reading ‘A Promised Land’ at present and certainly the behaviour of the Republican Party and the Democrats to a lesser extent in my view confirms that. What do you think?

  2. That sounds like our weather! 🙂 I hope you had a nice weekend. And got to make a snowman. 🙂

WandaVision is really getting intense- the end of episode three !!!!!

    Love the poem!!
