stacking the shelves

Today I’m sharing the books I received for Christmas for Stacking the Shelves, a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

Christmas Gifts

I had a quiet Christmas last year, but it was still a good one. I got some books that had been on my wish list for quite a while.

studio ghibli books

The three books above were all from my husband, and were the inspiration for three of my favourite Studio Ghibli animations. Ronja the Robber’s Daughter by Astrid Lindgren is a cute little series available on Amazon Prime. I find it so relaxing and heart-warming. Kiki’s Delivery Service by Fiko Kadono and Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones were both made into classic films that I adore.

I’m looking forward to reading these with my daughter and seeing how they compare to the animations.

heroes and mythos books by Stephen Fry

Heroes and Mythos by Stephen Fry were both from my mum. They’re retellings of the Greek myths. Fry is a brilliant writer so I have high hopes for these.

Home work by Julie Andrews

Home Work is Julie Andrews’ memoir of her Hollywood career, and was a gift from my grandfather. We are both big musical fans, so it was the perfect present from him. Julie is one of my idols, an embodiment of talent and class. I’m looking forward to learning more about her rise to fame and what happened behind the scenes of two of my favourite films-Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab arrived yesterday, but I’ve decided to save that for next week. I’ll be doing a post about the books I’ve bought with gift cards recently. There are quite a few!

Kindle Freebies

I acquired all of these for free in the past month from Amazon Original Stories and First Reads.

The Forward Collection from Amazon Original Stories

The Forward Collection: Ark by Veronica Roth, Summer Frost by Blake Crouch, Emergency Skin by N. K. Jemisin, You Have Arrived at Your Destination by Armor Towles, The Last Conversation by Paul Tremblay and Randomize by Andy Weir.

The Faraway Collection from Amazon Original Stories
The Wickeds, Widowish, Confessions of a Curious Bookseller, Not One of Us

The Faraway Collection: The Prince and the Troll by Rainbow Rowell, Hazel and Gray by Nic Stone, The Princess Game by Soman Chainani, The Cleaners by Ken Liu, The Wickeds by Gayle Forman.

Widowish: A Memoir by Melissa Gould

Confessions of a Curious Bookseller by Elizabeth Green

Not One of Us by Debbie Herbert

I can’t wait to get my teeth into all these wonderful books. Now I just have to find the time to sit down and read, which is proving difficult lately!

  1. That’s neat that you got some good books for holidays! I need to watch some Studio Ghibli as well. I love the art style and the animations look amazing. Plus I’ve been really enjoying the Japanese art I’ve been finding lately.

I love the look of those neon covers- I need to look into those.

    • My husband got me into Studio Ghibli films. I didn’t realise how good they were until I tried them and fell in love. The artwork is amazing and the stories are always so poignant.

  2. Kitty! Your kitten is so cute!

The Prince and The Troll mini-series thing had me super intrigued, until I realized the books were super short. Then I was just sad. It sounded so good and I wanted a full-fledged book series! Oh well. I hope you enjoy your new books, though! This is a very nice haul.

    Thanks for visiting Shell’s Stories!
