The Latest in my Life

Schools in the UK are currently closed so I’ve mostly been working from home for the last couple of weeks. It’s challenging trying to juggle online lessons with my daughter’s school work, but it’s also nice to be able to get involved with her learning.

It’s also been fun to spend more time with our new kitten, Loki. He has settled in well and our older cat, Mr. Mistoffelees, is now even sleeping next to him on the sofa. It’s a big relief that they’re getting along.

Blogging

If you’re a regular visitor, you may have noticed I have a brand new layout! I have been working on it for a week or so and finally got around to setting it up today. I’m really pleased with how it came together and feel like it represents me and my interests really well. Please let me know if anything looks strange on your device and I’ll tweak it.

Writing

I haven’t started any writing projects yet, but I’ve written my writing goals for the year and set up my writing tracker. Now that I’ve settled into working from home, I’ll start building some daily writing back into my routine gradually.

Reading

the wishing chair again

My daughter and I just finished our first book of the year last night: Enid Blyton’s The Wishing Chair Again. We’ve been reading a couple of chapters a night and she always begs for more. We’ve read all the Faraway Tree stories together and the first Wishing Chair book. She can’t get enough of them!

As an adult, I now recognise that the stories are are quite repetitive and preachy at times. But I enjoy revisiting them for the whimsy and nostalgia.

I’m in the middle of reading Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce. I’m loving the way the main character can communicate with animals. Pure escapism!

Entertainment

I’m currently binge-watching House M.D on Prime for the 2nd or 3rd time. I love how it’s basically a Sherlock Holmes retelling in a modern hospital. Hugh Laurie is such an underrated actor.

I enjoyed the first two episodes of Marvel’s WandaVision. It’s both funny and intriguing and I’m already getting my teeth stuck into all the fan theories circulating around. I’m looking forward to seeing the mystery unravel.

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer.

It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog. This is your news post, so personalize it! Include as much as you want or as little. Be creative, it can be a vlog or just a showcase of your goodies. Link up once a week or once a month, you decide. Book haul can include library books, yard sale finds, arcs and bought books..share them!

  1. This is my first time here, so I don’t have anything to compare too, but I really like your layout! Loki is the perfect name for a kitten. I think we are going to watch Wandavision tonight –

  2. Enid Blyton is on my Want to Read list. I don’t think her books were easily available here in the States when I was a kid or somehow I just missed them completely but they look lovely. Have a great week!

    • They were a big part of my childhood. My mum and nan used to read The Faraway Tree and The Wishing Chair to me, then when I could read myself I devoured The Famous Five series. They’re very old-fashioned but it’s delightful escapism. Hope you have a great week too.

  3. Aww those cats are adorable. And congrats on the layout- it looks nice! I kind of wish schools were closed here- I know it’s hard but we have so many cases right now, I’m so concerned. I hope your situation goes well there.

I liked WandaVision and wish the rest of the episodes were out! 🙂 And I’ve heard good things about Pierce and her stuff.

    • Thanks, Greg. It took a lot for the government to close the schools. They were determined to keep them open but our teaching unions and health experts were pushing for it. I think it’s the right decision and hopefully we will see a drop in cases soon. I hope things improve in your area too and that you and your family stay safe.

I can’t wait for the rest of the WandaVision episodes either, but I will enjoy the suspense and the time to research fan theories each week.

  4. David Acheson

Repetition in working with children is not a bad thing! I recognised as a teacher that I should be unapologetic about repeating something that was important. Small children love to hear stories repeated many times!!

    • That’s very true. She often begs me to reread picture books over and over and she enjoys chapter books that have recurring events and motifs. I’m very glad she enjoys stories as much as I do.

I love the layout and the banner is really lovely, I love the colours and the motives 🙂 I’m glad your cats are getting along, I also have two cats, not adopted at the same time, who are getting along tolerably well. Black cats, too. My eldest daughter has been studying from home since last March, the youngest goes to high school one week out of two – not easy to manage. Enjoy your week anyway 🙂

  6. I was gonna say, is that a new header?? It’s super cute and fun! Love the Sunday Post graphic too! Glad you’re enjoying House. I keep hearing about WandaVision but even after watching a trailer I’m so confused as to what it’s about lol.
