75th VE Day Celebrations (The Sunday Post)

The Latest in my Life

This week, I spent a lot of time with my daughter making preparations for the 75th VE Day. We didn’t have any union flags so we made some red, white and blue bunting for our garden fence from some old plastic bags. I also printed some colouring pages for my daughter to complete and stuck them up in the kitchen.

I was very proud to be part of the school choir singing “We’ll Meet Again” for our tribute video to the heroes of WWII. I think it’s great that we managed to produce something so special in such strange times when we could only rehearse virtually. I also made a little video with some photo memories for my Grandad.

On Friday, the three of us dressed up and had a celebration tea party in the garden. I had ordered a Victoria Sponge cake from a local bakery and we spent the morning baking and decorating union flag cupcakes. We also had scones with jam, sandwiches and jammie dodgers (do you have those across the pond?).

It was beautiful weather so we sat in the garden all afternoon listening to classic 1940s music. Several people walked past and said hello (at a distance), which was lovely. I also had a brief video call with my family and tuned in for the TV celebration and the Queen’s speech in the evening. It was exactly the kind of uplifting event that I needed.

I started up some online reading groups for my students on Thursday. It was so nice to hear their voices again! I also took part in a virtual staff quiz as well as my usual pub quiz, which was great fun.

This weekend, I’ve been busy doing boring but essential tasks like backing up all my phone and laptop files, filling in forms and wading through hundreds of emails. I feel much better now some of the mental and virtual clutter is cleared, though.

On the Blog

I posted my A-Z Challenge Reflections on Monday, and talked about my writing rituals for the IWSG post on Wednesday.

What I’m Writing

I’ve mostly been planning my entry for the IWSG anthology contest. I’m so excited!

Book Talk

I somehow don’t think I got any reading done this week. I’ve been feeling pretty exhausted in the evenings, so maybe that’s why. I wonder if the hundreds of picture books I read to my daughter can count towards my Goodreads goal?

Entertainment

We watched Captain America, Captain Marvel and Iron Man recently and I think we’re going to continue watching all the Marvel films in chronological order now. We’re also still binge watching Friends (on season 4 now) and Keeping Up Appearances.

My daughter made me watch The Cat in the Hat. Although I love the book, I think the film is absolutely awful. We did watch A Bug’s Life and Tarzan, though, which made up for it.

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer.

It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog. This is your news post, so personalize it! Include as much as you want or as little. Be creative, it can be a vlog or just a showcase of your goodies. Link up once a week or once a month, you decide. Book haul can include library books, yard sale finds, arcs and bought books..share them!

  1. Your V-E Day party looks awesome! I’ve never heard of Jammie Dodgers but they sound quite delightful, and now I’m curious too haha whether we can get them here in the States. Hmm…

We watched the first Avengers movie the other night- that was fun, it’d been while- and we watch Keeping Up Appearances too. Have a great week!

  2. The books you read to your daughter definitely count towards your Goodreads goal! 😀

We have cookies that are similar to jammie dodgers called thumbprints. The “assembly” for thumbprints can probably be modified to produce jammie dodgers (that’s fun to say by the way).
