The Insecure Writer's Support Group badge. This month's topic is writing rituals.

It’s time for another Insecure Writer’s Support Group post to boost my confidence and encourage myself to engage with the writing community. The IWSG post on the first Wednesday of every month and this month’s topic is writing rituals.

This month’s awesome co-hosts are:   Feather Stone, Beverly Stowe McClure, Mary Aalgaard, Kim Lajevardi, and Chemist Ken!

First, I want to say a huge congratulations to the anthology authors of Voyagers: The Third Ghost, which released yesterday! I hope you enjoy this wonderful time. The anthology I was part of (Masquerade: Oddly Suited) is a whole year old now and I had such an amazing time working with the other authors to promote it. I hope you have as much fun as we did. I’m excited to read my copy.

Writing News

I’ve not done much work on my WiP lately. Although I’m at home, I’m working or looking after my daughter most of the day and I don’t seem to have much time or mental energy for writing. I think a lot of writers are in the same boat. I was quite busy with the A-Z Challenge throughout April, anyway. I am keeping a personal diary though, which is really cathartic.

I have started joining in with Words for Wednesday (hosted by Lee this month), which has been a good way to stretch myself. I also enjoyed last month’s WEP and had some very encouraging comments about my piece, Gramma’s Vase.

This month I’m going to start planning my entry for the next IWSG anthology contest. The science fiction genre is right up my street. I’m currently pondering what I can do with the theme “dark matter”.

My Writing Rituals

Do you have any rituals that you use when you need help getting into the ZONE? Care to share?

I don’t really have any complicated writing rituals, but my environment has to be just right. I don’t like noise of any kind (including music) when I’m writing, and I prefer to be completely alone. Even if my husband is sitting next to me quietly minding his own business, I find it difficult to get in the flow when I know someone else is in the room. So, unfortunately, I’m not one of those writers who can sit in a cafe with my laptop.

I have to be in a comfortable chair and I usually have a cup of tea and some chocolate to hand! The same is true for when I’m reading.

Over to You

Do you have any writing (or reading) rituals? Does the new IWSG anthology appeal to you? Are you considering entering the next contest?

  1. Kim

Chocolate is always a good thing to have on hand when writing. I prefer quit as well, but I can write when others are around in certain circumstances. Great IWSG post!

  2. Thank you for reminding me about Words for Wednesday! Yes, I think the pandemic accelerates those normal challenges (up and down) when we’re writing. But whether routine or rituals, we all find our way back into those stories important to us. May the coming month bring you many good words.
