Z is for Zoos #AtoZChallenge

Posted April 30, 2020 in A-Z Challenge / 7 Comments

It’s the final day of the Blogging from A-Z Challenge! Every day throughout April (except Sundays) I’ll be posting a range of ideas and tips for keeping your family entertained at home. It will include arts and crafts, games, learning ideas and imaginative activities for all ages. I thought it would be particularly useful while we’re all self-isolating or socially distancing, though it can be used for any time of year.

Letter “Z” is for Zoos. Many zoos, wildlife parks and aquariums are now offering live cams of their animals and special online events. These are a wonderful way for children to learn more about different types of animals, habitats and conservation issues.

I do not wish to support zoos that degrade and abuse animals. I have tried to only list those which:

  1. Have BIAZA or AZA accreditation, which means they maintain the highest standards of care and provide funding to conservation projects worldwide.
  2. Keep the animals in suitable and spacious enclosures.
  3. Are non-profit organisations which use the vast majority of their funding for conservation purposes.
  4. DO NOT cull healthy animals.
  5. DO NOT remove animals from the wild to keep in captivity.
  6. DO NOT allow interactions such as elephant riding or animal performances.

If you know that a zoo or wildlife park on this list is guilty of unethical practices, please report it in the comments and I will remove it.

Have you visited any of these zoos, wildlife parks or aquariums in real life or virtually? What are your favourite animals to see?

  1. During the lockdown, animals in zoos have a much more easy life. No human making noise, bothering them. A great time for them now 😉
I enjoyed a lot your posts during the challenge, congratulation on ending it!

    • You’re right, Frédérique. It would be much better for the animals if al the visits were virtual. Thank you for coming back to my blog day after day to leave comments. I have still not caught up with visiting all the blogs I want to, but I will definitely be returning to yours soon.

  2. Our zoo Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, Neb. is accredited AZA zoo and ranked as one of the world’s top five zoos. We are members and love going throughout the year. My grandchildren love the events, animals and water areas.

    • Sounds like a great place! I live in a rural part of England so we don’t have any local zoos, but we have lots of farm parks and animal sanctuaries which I love to visit.
