Words for Wednesday is a weekly meme started by Delores from Under the Porch Light (no longer blogging) a long time ago and it is hosted by various different bloggers. There are a different set of prompts each week, which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we do with them is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem or treating them with ignore.  We can use some or all of the prompts.

This week, Elephant’s Child shared 12 prompt words:

  1. Sunless
  2. Drawn
  3. Forgotten
  4. Brisk
  5. Thousand
  6. Gold

And/or

  1. Delicate
  2. Walk
  3. Aggressive
  4. Word
  5. Witch
  6. Stop

I managed to encorporate all 12 words (some slightly adapted) into a flash fiction piece.

Forgotten

Hunched over in a nest of blankets, he peered up at her from beneath his hood with pleading eyes. His features were thin and drawn like he’d suffered through a thousand winters.

Jane averted her eyes and pulled her scarf tighter, her fingers brushing against the delicate gold cross around her neck. She tucked it beneath her top instinctively. She couldn’t stop. Anyway, he was probably the drunk and aggressive type. She offered a wordless apology with a small shake of her head and a sunless smile, keeping her eyes low as she walked briskly past.

The witch pulled down her hood and shook off her disguise with a flourish. Jane had forgotten herself. It was time to help her remember.

There are an estimated 320,000 homeless people in the UK and many more people are now facing housing issues due to coronavirus. Please consider donating to a charity such as Shelter or Centrepoint if you can afford to do so. Thank you.

Over to you!

  1. LOUD applause.
Our homeless numbers too are rising. And will continue to rise as Covid 19 bites harder.
How I wish that all the Janes (and the Jacks) would learn the witches lesson. Learn it and remember that we are all in this together.

    • Thank you! It’s so sad, isn’t it? Yes, you’re so right. I think we all need reminding sometimes not to be so wrapped up in our own lives and to think of others.
