The Latest in my Life

This week has been one of the craziest I can remember. With the Virus That Must Not be Named on everyone’s minds and people stockpiling necessities, there’s a strange atmosphere and emotions are running high, yet life is still carrying on as normal in our area for the most part. I’ve been trying to occupy the middle ground between complacency and overwhelming existential dread, but it’s not easy, that’s for sure.

However, great things happened to me this week. I had some surprising writing news (see below). I also took part in our school Arts Extravaganza as part of the staff choir and I’m really proud of myself for having the guts to do it. I was immensely proud of all our talented students, too. It did mean not getting home until after 9 pm two nights in a row though, which was pretty tiring.

I’ve taken on some new responsibilities at work which is both daunting and exciting. We had a kind of mock inspection on Thursday so I was up late again on Wednesday getting all my ducks in a row. It was rather nerve-wracking but the feedback was very positive overall, so that was a relief.

By Friday, I was absolutely exhausted after the late nights and the roller coaster of emotions. This weekend I’ve mainly been resting and getting the house organised.

What I’m Writing

It was such a mad week that no real writing happened. But on Tuesday I woke up to the news that I’d won the February WEP flash-fiction competition for my van Gogh piece. It was such a lovely surprise and I’m so thrilled. There were so many amazing entries. You can find out more about it in the winners post. Do consider joining the WEP if you love to write. They are a wonderful group!

Book Talk

Yesterday I finished reading The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. I was in floods of tears from page 300 to 357. Absolutely brilliant!

Xiomara was a character I really rooted for and my heart ached for her whenever she was misunderstood. The book explores many different issues through beautiful poetry that comes alive on the page.

I think readers, especially teenagers, from all backgrounds would be able to find humour and comfort in it. Acevedo’s words created vivid pictures in my mind and a craving to read more poetry.

Entertainment

I’m still enjoying Picard, but it’s a little slow for me. Most of the information is relayed through dialogue rather than action. But I’m trying to be patient and hoping for some more exciting scenes with Seven of Nine.

I played a bit more on Planet Coaster this week, which was just the escape I needed. Other than that, I haven’t really had time for anything else!

Over to you!

How was your week? What have you been reading or watching?
