The Latest in my Life

Last week I was off work for half term and it was bliss. I caught up with friends and family, spent lots of time doing arts and craft with my daughter and did lots of reading and writing.

Last Sunday, we went to a local comic convention called Geekmania, which was great fun. My sister and I went in our Star Trek uniforms, my husband went as Snape and my daughter was Hermione. There were some fantastic cosplayers there and lots of stalls selling amazing merch from all my favourite fandoms. If only I could afford it all!

My husband treated me to a blue and burgundy varsity jacket that has the United Federation of Planets logo in gold on the back and we got some cushions (the marauder’s map and Star Wars) for our office. I also bought THE best fudge I’ve ever tasted (salted caramel and death by chocolate) from Wilsfords Fudge.

My sister (in red) and I rocking the Trekkie look at Geekmania.

I went back to work last Monday and it’s been a rather hectic week with training and long meetings after school so I’m glad it’s the weekend now and I can recharge my batteries.

Of course, I celebrated Pancake Day in style and had about 8 pancakes for tea. After about 12 years of disasters I think I’ve finally got the hang of it. We always have them crepe style with lemon and sugar (and sometimes nutella or maple syrup). YUM!

My pancake stack 🙂

Last night I went with my mum, sister, brother-in-law and stepdad to see The History of Rock, which was absolutely brilliant. They are such a talented band and covered a lot of my favourite rock anthems. They’re currently touring around the UK, so well worth seeing them live if you get the chance.

What I’m Writing

I’ve only managed a bit of planning for my novel this week.

I’ve been blown away by all the lovely comments I’ve had for my flash fiction piece, Portrait of a Man, which I wrote for the latest WEP challenge. I always struggle with self-doubt so it means a lot to me to receive such encouraging feedback.

Book Talk

At work, I’ve started reading Tins by Alex Shearer with my year 8 students, which I’m enjoying so far.

Call Down the Hawk

I recently finished reading Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater, which was fantastic. The Raven Cycle is one of my favourite series so I had high hopes for this spin-off and it actually exceeded my expectations. I loved seeing more of Ronan and learning more about Declan Lynch, whom I found surprisingly easy to relate to. The new characters that were introduced were really interesting too. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I’m now in the middle of Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, which is such a fun read. It’s giving me Hitchhiker’s Guide vibes, which is high praise indeed.

TV, Tunes & Podcasts

The Call the Midwife series 9 finale was just as emotional as you would expect. The most recent episode of Picard was my favourite so far, and things are just starting to get exciting. Now I’ve started to watch Friends right from the beginning, as it’s just nice light-hearted viewing.

I listened to a few more Authentic Parenting podcasts this week:

  • Thriving as an Empath with Dr. Judith Orloff
  • Childhood Emotional Neglect with Jonice Webb
  • The Performance Trap of Modern Motherhood

I’ve also been slowly populating my Amazon music playlists so I can listen to my favourite tunes on the go. Rock Out is the one I’ve been listening to the most so far.

  1. Ooh trekkie cosplay! How fun. Sounds like a blast. That UFP jacket sounds awesome…

Rock Out sounds great! Lots of good stuff there. 🙂

    • I don’t need much excuse to get my Trek uniform out 😂. It was good fun, even though my daughter was a little overwhelmed by all the people.
      Thanks for stopping by, Greg.

  2. We had pancakes too ..though I made Baked Pancakes because cooking pancakes in a pan for 3 A and 3 teens would take forever. I drowned mine in maple syrup
I’m a bit of a Trekkie too, love the shirts. Conventions are few and far between here, I’m determined to make it to one eventually though.

Wishing you a great reading week

    • I’ve never made baked pancakes before-is that more common down under? There are not many conventions in my area either so we take the opportunity when we can. They’re great fun. I hope you get to experience one soon.
