Book Blogger Hop: Halloween Edition

Today I’m taking part in the Book Blogger Hop, a weekly hop hosted by Billy B at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer (originally created by Jennifer at  Crazy-For-Books). You can see the hop schedule here.

“Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.”

This week’s question:

It’s getting close to Halloween. If you HAD to read one of these two genres, which would you prefer — urban fantasy, or horror, and why?

This is quite an easy one for me to answer-I would definitely prefer to read urban fantasy. I like reading about how the magic and paranormal elements are kept hidden from the masses, with characters often leading secret double lives. Some writers manage to mix reality and fantasy in such a clever and believable way.

I’ve never been a big fan of horror, whether in novels or movies. I don’t like reading about anything gory or gruesome, and I generally find contemporary horror novels to either be really predictable or completely illogical.

There are exceptions, of course. I enjoy gothic horror like Frankenstein or The Turn of the Screw from time to time. It’s usually around Halloween that I fancy reading something darker. I definitely prefer the psychological thriller type of horror rather than the ‘axe-wielding maniac’ type.

Reading is mostly about escapism for me, so I usually prefer to immerse myself in interesting and magical fantasy worlds rather than giving myself nightmares!

What about you?

Would you prefer to read urban fantasy or horror?

  1. I kind of love this question because I rarely read either genre. I used to be a horror fan of the King and Koontz type but now I just don’t get into those books. I’ve always loved gothic horror but I about plowed my way through the lot of them. 🙂 I really should try out urban fantasy though; I keep hearing great things.

  2. I’m with you! I can’t stand horror! There have been two exceptions to this, though: “The Forbidden Game”, by L.J. Smith, and “Dread Nation”, by Justina Ireland. The first one had romance in it, which made it somewhat bearable. The second had a snarky, strong, feminist female MC, and was also a satire on racism. That’s it, though! Lol.

UF is SO much more interesting! Like you, I love all the magic, and the contrast with the urban setting REALLY rocks!! Besides, one of my most beloved series of all time is actually an urban fantasy: the Harry Potter series!!!! YAAAAAAY!!!! 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!! <3 🙂

    • I’ve heard loads of good things about Dread Nation, I would really like to read it. Yes, it’s true that HP is urban fantasy though it’s not often described as such. Thanks for visiting!

    • Good point. I have enjoyed Stephen King’s novels in the past, such as Misery-which I guess is more of a psychological thriller. I’m not so keen on IT.

    • Yeah, I have to be in the right mood for horror. Usually I’m reading on my own late at night so I prefer to read something a little more relaxing! Glad you liked Frankenstein. It contains some of my favourite ever literary quotes.
