Badge for Top Ten Tuesday memeIt’s time for Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme originally created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week there is a new topic or theme to base your top ten list on. You can find more details about it and see the list of topics here.

This week’s prompt is “Books to Read By the Pool/At the Beach”. I actually don’t tend to read much when I’m at the pool or the beach, because if I lie in the sun for more than ten minutes I become a flaky lobster and I’m usually too busy splashing about or chasing after my toddler anyway.

But I’ve chosen five books that I recommend for a bit of light summer reading. They’re all quick and easy reads that will keep you entertained and won’t tax your brain too much, even in a lethargic, sun-stroked, hungover state. The island and seaside settings of numbers 2-4 are also perfect for a little imaginary escape if you’re not jetting off for real.

  1. Book cover for Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen FieldingBridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding-This comedy classic is brilliant for summer reading; it’s light-hearted, nostalgic and hilarious. You can dip in and out of it as easily as stepping in and out of the pool.

  2. Book cover by Vitro by Jessica KhouryVitro by Jessica Khouryset on a remote Pacific island, this contemporary sci-fi novel is a fast-paced read with lots of tension and mystery. It’s set in the same world as Origin and Kalahari but is a standalone novel.

  3. Hippy Chick by Louise HarwoodHippy Chick by Louise Harwoodthis book is about a laid-back romance between the flower-child daughter of a hippy couple and her straight-laced childhood friend. The beautiful Ibiza setting will make you long to give up your day job and run away to the white island.

  4. Book cover for the Beach Cafe for Lucy DiamondThe Beach Café by Lucy Diamond-this is a cute story about a woman called Evie who decides to start a new life in Cornwall running her own café. She makes the brave decision to let go of things (read: people) that are holding her back in order to pursue her dream, and there is much hilarity and light-hearted romance along the way.

  5. Book cover for A Baby at the Beach Cafe by Lucy DiamondA Baby at the Beach Café-this super-quick read is the sequel to The Beach Café and does what it says on the tin really. It’s a novella about Evie’s journey to becoming a mum and her rocky relationship with the woman she employs to cover her maternity leave.

    • I’d recommend all Jessica Khoury’s books if you like sci-fi with a contemporary twist. All the scenarios are quite believable; you can actually imagine things like that happening in the very near future.

I loved Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac when I lived in Delaware and would spend days off lazing at that beach. It was easy to pick up and put down without getting lost. That was important because I was only reading it on about one day a week or less. Otherwise, I find any Agatha Christie a good, absorbing, quick read. Short story collections are also a good choice.

I tend to go for walks on the beach more than sit in the sun, so I don’t have a lot of experience with this.

    • Oh yes, I didn’t think of short story collections but those are a great idea for a quick summer reads. I don’t sit in the sun much either as I tend to burn really fast, I like to go walking or swimming.

    • That’s what I loved about it. He was a corporate type who wanted to open a new nightclub on a beach that she wanted to preserve. It was really interesting seeing their different perspectives.

  2. I don’t read at the pool or beach, either. I’m usually too distracted. These books do look very summery, though! I need to read Bridget Jones someday. I think I’ve seen the movie? It was a long time ago. My memory doesn’t go back that far.
