It’s my first time taking part in the We are the World Blogfest. Sometimes all the bad news in the media can get us down, but the WATWB aims to raise our spirits by introducing us to positive, heartwarming news stories from all over the world. Luckily there are still plenty of good things going on in the world to restore our faith in humanity.

“We Are the World Blogfest” seeks to promote positive news. There are many an oasis of love and light out there, stories that show compassion and the resilience of the human spirit. Sharing these stories increases our awareness of hope in our increasingly dark world.

This month’s co-hosts are:  Shilpa Garg, Inderpreet Kaur UppalPeter NenaAndrea Michaels, and Damyanti Biswas.  If you’d like to take part, you can sign up and read the guidelines here.

The news stories I’ve chosen to share this month are both related to dementia and are from the UK. Dementia is a heart-breaking condition that has now overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in Wales and England. Thankfully there are many projects springing up lately that aim to support dementia patients and their families through this difficult illness.

Dementia-friendly lunches served at Norwich restaurant

A restaurant owner in Norwich called Hannah Springham has introduced a dementia-friendly lunch service.

“We don’t do anything too different on these dementia services, but we’re aware of what those people might be going through. So, all of our staff are dementia friends. We make sure the music is slightly lower than normal and probably we’re playing music from a slightly older era. We also have photos on the menu and that’s to ease decision-making.”

Watch the video about her thoughtful idea here.

Toddlers to help dementia patients in Conwy restore memories

Dementia patients at a day-care centre in Colwyn Bay spent three days playing, making cakes, singing and exercising with toddlers to test the potential for restoring memory.

Three year old Arianwen was among the children from a local nursery who took part in the experiment. Her grandfather had dementia, and her mother, Lowri, said the impact of children on dementia patients was “indisputable”.

“It is really profound. People who are living with dementia are going to get so much out of this.”

    • I just loved the idea of this blog hop. All the negative news stories affect me greatly and I think it’s great to share the positive and heart-warming ones to remind ourselves of the good things in this world.

  1. These are fantastic, Tizzy! Just this morning I stumbled across a video of an elderly man with dementia who’s found an unlikely friend in a rescue dog, severely mistreated, who had all sorts of behavioral issues. But the man’s loving touch have seemed to tame the untameable, and bonding with the dog is helping the man stay calm during those horrible dementia ‘I don’t know where I am’ moments. These two initiatives seem well thought out, and I’m sure they’re benefiting tons of people. Good for them both!

Thanks for sharing, and welcome to WATWB!

  2. So heartening to learn there’s good work being done, in the right direction. Thanks for sharing these with us, and welcome to the WATWB family!

Welcome to #WATWB Tizzy, and what a heart-warming story you’ve shared. Dementia is a subject close to my heart as my father navigated that road. Every kindness and show of support is truly a welcome gift during such challenging times.
