Question of the Week: Off the book topic…do you use a mouse pad? If so, what is on it?

Well, first let’s get the semantics out of the way: in England, a ‘mouse pad’ usually refers to the motion-sensitive touchpad on a laptop and we call the plastic surface that you put under your mouse, a ‘mouse mat’.
I rarely use a mouse mat at home because I’m always on my laptop and don’t bother to use a mouse with that unless I’m doing some digital drawing and need the precision, in which case I have a red mouse mat with flowers on that my husband bought me. My husband is really into his gaming and he has a number of very expensive mouse mats from brands like Razor and Overwatch which I think are a bit excessive but he loves collecting them.
At work, I have a PC and the mouse mat I use for that is one I got from going to see Shrek the Musical in Nottingham several years ago. It has pictures of Shrek characters on and a very outdated character from 2012 or something, but it does its job. Actually, I would quite like one of those photo mouse mats with pictures of my daughter on. Mother’s Day is coming up, so you never know!

Yeah, I know a few people who don’t like the trackpad. It’s fine for me as long as I’m not doing anything that requires precision.
That is interesting that you all call it a mouse mat, I have never heard that. I hope you get a mouse mat with pictures of your daughter for Mother’s Day!
Yeah, there are so many little differences between American and British English, I’m discovering new ones all the time.
I haven’t used a mouse mat for ages! I think it used to be the only way to go before the optical mice 🙂 ah, memories. Do you remember the ones with the ball? I remember back in school, the kids would take them out of the mice in technology class and throw them around 😀

How interesting that you call them “mouse mats”! I find the differences between British and American English totally fascinating! Like, what you guys call the “bonnet” of the car, we call the “hood”. And to us, a “lift” is an “elevator”. However, I remember from the classic Star Trek episodes that they used the word “lift” inside the Enterprise. Lol.
Whatever you call them, some of these mats/pads can be pretty BORING. But, thankfully, there ARE bookish mouse mats/mouse pads! It’s SO COOOOOl that you have one with images from the Shrek musical!!! I wish you had posted a picture of it.
A mat/pad with a photo of your daughter sounds so sweet! I think you can get a custom-made one. Having your daughter’s picture on it in time for Mother’s Day also sounds GREAT!!

I find the differences between British and American English really interesting too. I’m always discovering new ones that I didn’t know. A few years ago I was really confused when I read a description of a girl walking along with her thong trailing along the ground (or something like that). ‘Thongs’ exclusively refers to underwear here, I didn’t realise that it also meant flip-flops/sandals! I had no idea there were diff words for this in England. I call the thing on laptops a trackpad, and the thing under a mouse a mouse pad. But anyway, I don’t even use a mouse lol, so I have no need for the mat that goes under one. I have a keyboard with a trackpad. But even when I used to use a mouse or if I do use one now, the mats under them just annoy me to no end because I always end up running the mouse right off of them!
Yeah, I had no idea there was a difference until I saw the question and I was confused for a moment. I would probably run the mouse off my work one but it’s not a cordless one so there isn’t much room to do that.
