Cover Characteristic blog meme badge

Today I’m joining in with the Cover Characteristic meme hosted by Sugar and Snark. Every week the author chooses a theme and you have to pick five of your favourite book covers featuring that object.

Today’s cover characteristic is Ethnic Characters.

These are the ones that most appeal to me:

Zoo City by Lauren Beukes book coverKindred by Octavia E Butler book coverThe Immortals of Meluha by Amish book coverMonsoon Memories by Renita D'Silva book coverVeil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald book coverReal World by Natsuro Kirino book coverMemoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden book cover

To be honest, I was shocked by how difficult it was to find a cover featuring a model that wasn’t Caucasian! There are some amazing books written by African and Asian authors (The Color Purple, Life of Pi, Their Eyes Were Watching God and so on) but the covers normally depict abstract designs or nature images rather than models for some reason.

I’d like to read more books set in countries other than the US and the UK, featuring main characters from different cultural backgrounds (not just token characters). I think sci fi and dystopian (my favourite genres) are particularly lacking in diversity, but I’m happy to see that there are more fantasy novels based on African and Asian mythology emerging.

What do you think? Which is your favourite cover and why?
