Today is Top Ten Tuesday, a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!  Every week they post a new top ten list and everyone can join in and share their own picks. If you’d like to take part, hop on over to the blog and sign up with the linky. If you don’t have a blog, feel free to post your answers in the comments.

This week’s topic is: Settings I’d Like to See More of.

Here are my top ten:

1) Ancient Egypt. Let’s have more more about pharoah’s curses, mummies and Egyptian deities please. Kiersten White’s upcoming novel Flood and Stone is along these lines I think.

2) South Africa. The hot, dense climate of South Africa, the rich colours and the exotic wildlife provide such a wonderful atmosphere. My WiP is set in Kenya and I’m hoping I can pull it off.

3) India. Again, there’s so much colour, life, beauty, wildlife and culture in India to write about.

4) Japan. I love to watch Anime films and TV shows with my partner, and feel there should be more novels in this style. I think I’d enjoy reading a contemporary YA about someone trying to make it in this fast-paced, futuristic city, or even something about Ancient Japanese mythology. Tokyo Heist is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, but I’d love to discover more.

5) Italy. This is such a beautiful, romantic setting, much like Paris. I’ve always wanted to visit Rome, Florence and Venice, and would enjoy reading about them.

6) Austria.  I think there should be more books set in the beautiful mountains of Austria. Perhaps a YA retelling of The Sound of Music? Maybe a teen girl could have a skiing accident and get stuck babysitting seven kids or something. Then she falls for their handsome, yet damaged older brother and tries to heal him through her love of music. But of course, it’s set in a futuristic dystopian society and soon an extreme political party led by an evil dictator try to take over and destroy their love. Hmm, maybe I’m on to something…

7) 1920s-1940s era. It’s such a glamorous and politically interesting time period.

8) Prague. I am now in love with this city after reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. It would be difficult to top her descriptions though.

9) Victorian England. I know there are a lot of Steampunk novels set in this period, but it would be interesting to read other genres set in this era-perhaps a romance or crime thriller based on Jack the Ripper? Or a re-telling of one of Charles Dicken’s novels. I’d be all over that.

10) Space. The Final Frontier. Yes, we need more YA sci-fi novels set in space. I want to read more about alien planets and intergalactic battles, pretty please?
