Musing Mondays (3) When you’re stuck for a book to read next, what do you do?

Today I’m joining in with Musing Mondays, a weekly meme hosted by Should be Reading that ponders a new question every week.

This week’s musing asks…

When you’re stuck for a book to read next, what do you do?

Well I have to say this hardly ever happens to me, as my ‘books to read’ pile is usually about as tall as I am. When I’m close to finishing one book I’m already thinking about which one I want to read next, and I usually go for something different to mix things up a bit. So if I’ve just finished reading an emotional romance like The Time Traveller’s Wife I’ll pick up a silly comedy like one of Robert Rankin’s novels, or if I’ve just finished a sci-fi or dystopian I’ll go for a historical novel or a children’s fantasy like The Chronicles of Narnia.

If I really did run out of things to read, I would probably browse Goodreads and other book blogs to read reviews and I’d buy a few that caught my eye (I usually have a few book vouchers stashed away). I borrow books a lot from my friends on their recommendations too, so there’s usually lots of reading material to keep me busy.

  1. I sometimes pick up an audio book of one I already read in the past and listen to the cadence and poetry of the prose. Or I think of a favorite book I have not picked up in a long time and re-visit old friends, Roland
